Originally, Aran sweaters were handcrafted on the Aran Islands, a group of rugged, windswept islands off Ireland’s west coast – Inishmore, Inishmaan, and Inisheer. These islands were (and still are) home to fishermen communities, and the sweaters were custom-knit for them from freshly sheared Aran island wool to withstand the harsh Atlantic conditions. Over time, their practicality and beauty made them a staple in Irish fashion. Today, Aran sweaters are produced in many places throughout Ireland, still following the same cherished knitting traditions that have been passed down for generations.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Aran knitwear is its intricate stitching, which carries deep symbolism. Traditionally, these patterns were lovingly linked on Aran Isle sweaters by the wives and mothers of fishermen, as they provided a dual-advantage of breathability and optimal warmth. But beyond their functional advantage, each stitch tells a unique story about life on the Aran Islands:

The cable stitch is one of the most iconic patterns, thought to resemble the fisherman’s ropes and to bring a blessing of safety and protection to the wearer
The basket stitch is, likewise, inspired by the woven baskets used to catch fish, said to bring good fortune and a bountiful catch to the fishermen wearing it
The diamond stitch is thought to represent the ideals of prosperity and wealth, reflecting the hope for success in work and life
The moss stitch is named after (you guessed it!) the mossy cliffs of Ireland, and is a pattern that symbolizes abundance and growth
The honeycomb stitch, looking just like a beehive, represents the idea that hard work always leads to sweet rewards, and alludes to the rich beekeeping traditions of the Islands.
